Why Airbnb’s CEO says travel AI needs more than a chatbot

Airbnb is developing AI features that combine automated help with visual browsing, group planning, and eventually communication between software agents. The company’s strategy rejects the idea that a single chatbot can replace travel apps. Ivan Mehta reports for TechCrunch that CEO Brian Chesky sees current AI interfaces as an early stage rather than a finished model.

Chesky argues that chatbots work poorly for travel shopping because they show only a limited number of options in each response. Planning a trip also involves more than completing a transaction. Travelers often want to explore listings, compare locations, use maps, contact hosts, and share choices with friends or family.

Airbnb is therefore testing what Chesky calls “multiplayer” AI. The aim is to create interfaces that let several people work with an AI system while planning a trip. The company expects to explore these features over the next three to six months.

From app features to interoperable agents

Chesky says Airbnb also wants to make its services easier for consumer AI agents to use. Such agents could send potential customers to the platform, but they would need access to richer functions than a simple search result can provide. These include messaging, identity verification, maps, comparisons, and booking controls.

In the longer term, Airbnb expects individual parts of its service, such as search and customer support, to use their own agents. Chesky says those agents could eventually connect with outside systems through MCP, a standard for linking AI agents to software tools.

He also believes the industry lacks an operating system designed specifically for AI. Until Apple, Google, or another company creates such a platform, Chesky expects conventional apps to remain central, with AI agents operating inside them rather than replacing them. Airbnb also plans voice agents for search and customer service this fall.
