OpenAI services face six-hour outage affecting ChatGPT and Sora

OpenAI experienced a significant service disruption affecting ChatGPT, Sora, and its API platforms on Wednesday. According to Maxwell Zeff’s report for TechCrunch, the outage lasted from approximately 3 PM to 9 PM Pacific Time. OpenAI’s developer community lead Edwin Arbus attributed the problem to a configuration change that caused multiple servers to become unavailable. The incident coincided with OpenAI’s recent integration with Apple’s iOS 18.2 and affected users attempting to access ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence. The outage occurred during OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” event, where the company has been releasing new products daily. After identifying the issue, OpenAI gradually restored services, with most systems returning to normal operation by 9 PM PT. The company confirmed the recovery through its official social media channels and status page.
