Google is planning to introduce a system for labeling AI-generated and -processed images in search results. In the coming months, the company plans to roll out an updated “About This Image” feature that will inform users whether an image was taken with a camera, edited with software, or generated by AI models. The labeling is based on the C2PA standard, an image authentication system supported by several major technology companies.
However, there are challenges to implementing these plans. Few cameras and software applications currently support the C2PA standard. Google hopes that its integration into search results will encourage other platforms to adopt similar identifiers. The company also plans to integrate C2PA metadata into its advertising systems and is exploring ways to display this information on YouTube as well.
