Google and OpenAI are expanding their tools to help users identify AI-generated media. The companies are combining their technologies to make digital content verification more reliable across the internet.
Google is integrating its digital watermarking technology, SynthID, with the industry-standard C2PA Content Credentials. The company is rolling out these verification features across Google Search, Chrome, and the Gemini app. Google is also launching an AI Content Detection API on Google Cloud to help businesses identify synthetic media. Additionally, Pixel smartphones will now natively tag photos and videos to prove they are authentic, unedited camera captures.
To strengthen these efforts, OpenAI is adopting Google’s SynthID watermarking alongside C2PA credentials. Initially, OpenAI will apply this dual-layer system to images created by ChatGPT, Codex, and its API. OpenAI claims this approach makes tracking content origin more resilient, as watermarks can survive even when metadata is stripped. OpenAI is also previewing a public portal where users can upload images to verify if they were generated using its tools.
Industry collaboration is growing to support these standards. Google announced that other partners, including Kakao and ElevenLabs, will also adopt SynthID. Meta plans to recognize native Pixel camera tags on Instagram to label authentic media. OpenAI has also joined the C2PA Conformance Program to ensure its tools align with security requirements.
