Apple and Google have announced a multi-year collaboration that will integrate Google’s Gemini models into Apple’s artificial intelligence infrastructure. The partnership will power future Apple Intelligence features, including an updated version of Siri expected to launch this year.
According to a joint statement, Apple selected Google’s AI technology after “careful evaluation”. The next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. Apple stated that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for its AI systems.
The deal represents a shift in Apple’s AI strategy. The company has largely remained on the sidelines of the AI development race that accelerated after ChatGPT’s launch in 2022. Apple delayed its planned Siri upgrade from last year to 2026, citing the need for more time to deliver the promised features.
The enhanced Siri is expected to offer better understanding of personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper control over individual apps. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and the company’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Apple emphasized that the partnership will maintain its privacy standards.
Apple currently partners with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri for complex queries. The company confirmed to CNBC that it is not making changes to the existing OpenAI agreement. The terms of the Google deal were not disclosed.
The partnership extends Google’s relationship with Apple. Google already pays Apple billions annually to serve as the default search engine on iPhones.
