US Government wants to end Google’s investment in Anthropic

The US Justice Department has proposed forcing Google to unwind its $2 billion investment in artificial intelligence company Anthropic as part of an antitrust case resolution. According to reporting by Josh Sisco and Leah Nylen for Bloomberg, the proposal aims to prevent Google from acquiring, investing in, or collaborating with companies that control consumer search information, including AI-based search products. The Justice Department’s filing also demands Google divest its Chrome browser, citing a judge’s ruling that it reinforced the company’s market dominance. Google responded that these measures would harm US technological leadership and AI investment, while Anthropic, which also received a $4 billion investment from Amazon, declined to comment on the proposal.
