Amazon has announced an additional $4 billion investment in artificial intelligence company Anthropic, bringing its total investment to $8 billion while maintaining a minority stake. The investment marks Amazon’s largest outside investment in its three-decade history.
As part of the agreement, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will become Anthropic’s primary cloud and training partner. Anthropic will use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its AI models, including its chatbot Claude. The partnership will also give AWS customers early access to features like fine-tuning Claude models with their own data.
Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, has recently developed new capabilities including Computer Use, which allows its AI to operate computers like humans. The company has attracted investments from other tech giants, including Google’s $2 billion investment for a 10% stake, and has raised approximately $13.7 billion in total venture capital according to Crunchbase.
