Zoom announces photorealistic AI avatars

Zoom is planning to introduce a new AI feature that will enable photorealistic avatars. Kyle Wiggers reports this for TechCrunch. The function, scheduled for 2025, will allow users to create a digital clone from a short video clip that can speak predetermined texts. According to Zoom’s Chief Product Officer Smita Hashim, this is intended to facilitate asynchronous communication. However, experts warn of potential risks from deepfakes. Zoom emphasizes that it will implement security measures such as watermarks. It remains unclear how effectively misuse can be prevented. The feature is set to be offered as a premium add-on for $12 per user per month.
