Google Vids adds personal AI avatars and Gemini Omni video tools

Google Vids is expanding from an AI assisted presentation tool into a broader video creation service. The new features let eligible users create a digital avatar based on their own appearance and voice.

Sarah Perez reports for TechCrunch that Google Vids creates these personal avatars from an uploaded selfie and voice recording. Users can then use the avatar in AI generated videos, such as internal announcements, training material or other workplace communications.

Google also brings its Gemini Omni multimodal AI model to Vids. The model can generate videos from a written prompt combined with reference images. This approach gives users more control over the intended subject, visual style and content than text prompts alone.

Omni also supports practical video adjustments. Users can ask it to change a background, improve lighting in footage recorded on a phone, or add visual effects. A new step by step editing function allows people to revise a video as they work, instead of restarting the creation process after each change.

The update places Google Vids closer to specialist AI video platforms including HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions and D-ID. Google, however, positions Vids within Google Workspace, where teams can use it alongside their existing work tools.

Google says personal avatars remain connected to the account holder’s likeness and Google account. The company also applies an invisible SynthID watermark to the resulting material. Access is limited to users aged 18 or older in selected regions.
