Perplexity to test sponsored AI-generated ads in search results

AI search engine Perplexity announced it will begin experimenting with showing ads labeled as “sponsored follow-up questions” next to search results in the U.S. According to a blog post by the company, the ads will help generate revenue to share with publisher partners, as “subscriptions alone do not generate enough revenue to create a sustainable revenue-sharing program.” Perplexity emphasized the ads will not change their “commitment to maintaining a trusted service” and that advertisers will not get access to users’ personal information. The move contrasts with decisions by rivals like OpenAI and Google regarding ads in AI search. Source: TechCrunch
