Palmier Pro is a new open-source video editor for macOS that combines a traditional timeline with AI generation and controls for AI agents. Co-founder Harrison Tin presents the project in a Show HN post on Hacker News, describing it as a tool designed to reduce repetitive work in video production rather than replace editorial judgment.
The app allows users to create images, video clips, music, sound effects and captions without leaving the editor. Its developers built the software after encountering a cumbersome workflow: generating an AI clip on one platform, downloading it, importing it into editing software, then repeating the process whenever the generated material needed changes.
What AI agents can do
Palmier Pro includes a local Model Context Protocol, or MCP, server. This gives compatible AI assistants, including Claude and Codex, access to tools in the editing application. According to the developers, an agent can manage projects, import files from public URLs or local storage, organize media, search footage, alter timeline clips and keyframes, and export finished videos.
The project also offers an in-app chat interface that uses the same controls. The team says this option can support quicker iteration because it sits directly alongside the editing interface.
Several functions run on the user’s computer. Palmier Pro uses Apple’s SpeechAnalyzer for transcription, CoreML for local models, SigLIP2 to search video frames by their visual content, and tools for beat and silence detection. These features can help identify relevant footage or prepare rough cuts based on speech, pauses or music rhythms.
The developers say AI is more reliable at pattern-based tasks than at making creative editorial choices. Palmier Pro is currently free to try and open source, but supports only macOS 26. AI generation requires an account because those requests pass through Palmier’s backend.
