OpenAI has formed a partnership with U.S. National Laboratories to apply its AI models to scientific research and nuclear security initiatives. According to Hayden Field at CNBC, the collaboration will give up to 15,000 scientists access to OpenAI’s o1 series models. The partnership aims to enhance power grid cybersecurity, advance disease treatment research, and deepen understanding of mathematics and physics. OpenAI will work with Microsoft to deploy one of its models on Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Venado supercomputer. The agreement also includes nuclear weapons security work, with some OpenAI researchers receiving security clearances for consultation. This announcement follows OpenAI’s recent release of ChatGPT Gov, a specialized platform for government use that has already processed over 18 million prompts from government employees in 2024.
