OpenAI launches workspace agents for business teams

OpenAI has introduced workspace agents in ChatGPT, a new product that lets business teams build and share AI agents capable of handling complex, multi-step tasks across workplace tools like Slack, Google Drive, Salesforce, and Microsoft apps.

Workspace agents are powered by Codex, OpenAI’s cloud-based AI coding platform. Unlike previous chat-based interactions, these agents can write and run code, connect to third-party apps, retain memory across sessions, and continue working without user input. Teams can set agents to run on a schedule or deploy them in Slack, where they respond to requests as they arrive.

OpenAI describes the product as an evolution of custom GPTs, which the company introduced in 2023. According to VentureBeat, OpenAI plans to eventually require business users to migrate their existing GPTs to the new workspace agent format.

Example use cases include:

  • A weekly reporting agent that pulls data, generates charts, and shares summaries with the team
  • A lead outreach agent that qualifies prospects and drafts follow-up emails
  • A vendor risk agent that screens suppliers for financial and reputational risk

Administrators retain control over which tools agents can access, which actions require human approval, and who can build or share agents. OpenAI says built-in safeguards protect against prompt injection attacks.

Workspace agents are available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. OpenAI says they are free until May 6, 2026, after which credit-based pricing begins.
