One Copilot to rule them all: Microsoft’s bold plan to simplify its AI empire

Microsoft is developing a single app that would bring together its various Copilot AI tools under one roof. Sebastian Herrera reports for Fortune that the software company plans to launch such a “super app” by the end of summer 2026.

The app would combine GitHub Copilot, the Copilot chat function, the Copilot Cowork tool, and a new agentic workflow feature internally called Autopilot. Two anonymous sources familiar with the project provided this information. The initiative is led by Jacob Andreou, whom Microsoft recently appointed as head of Copilot.

Fixing a fragmented product

Microsoft has found that customers dislike switching between its different Copilot tools. The company also wants users to see more value in Copilot overall. The project is being developed internally under the slogan “Delivering one Copilot.”

The app would offer a single interface for all Copilot accounts, including Microsoft 365 Copilot. A toggle function may allow users to switch between personal and enterprise accounts. Users would still be able to access individual Copilot tools outside the super app.

Some details of the project could surface at Microsoft’s Build developer conference in San Francisco, though the company does not plan to showcase the app itself there.

Copilot under pressure

The Copilot brand has faced significant challenges. Fewer than 4.5 percent of the 450 million Microsoft 365 customers currently pay for Copilot features. GitHub Copilot, available from $10 per month, has around 4.7 million paid subscribers but faces growing competition from Cursor and Anthropic’s Claude Code.

Microsoft’s consumer Copilot chatbot also trails competitors from OpenAI and Google in active users. CEO Satya Nadella has responded by reshuffling leadership and creating a unified Copilot team in March 2026. Andreou, who previously led product and growth for Microsoft AI, now oversees the effort to bring the consumer and enterprise sides of Copilot together.

Microsoft declined to comment on the plans. The sources noted that details could still change before launch.
