Microsoft is reshaping Copilot as features disappear and one app takes over

Microsoft is beginning to merge its consumer Copilot app and Microsoft 365 Copilot into a single application called Microsoft Copilot. Todd Bishop reports for GeekWire that the move starts with selected Windows Insiders and will expand to mobile and web users in mid-August, followed by Windows and Mac desktop apps in mid-September.

The company presents the change as the foundation for a larger Copilot “Super App,” expected before the end of September. That product is set to combine chat, AI coding tools, Cowork and AutoPilot agents in one place. The app consolidation itself does not yet represent the full Super App launch.

For commercial customers, the changes will be largely visual. Microsoft 365 Copilot will take the Microsoft Copilot name, receive a new icon and move to the copilot.cloud.microsoft web address. Existing links will redirect automatically from late August.

Consumer users face more significant changes. Microsoft will retire Copilot Podcasts, Group Chat and Deep Research on August 18. Users should download any podcasts they want to keep before that date. Group chat threads, messages and images will be removed. Microsoft is also removing Mico, the animated companion used in Copilot voice mode.

What stays separate

People can sign in with personal, work or school accounts, including more than one account, and switch between them. Microsoft says personal and workplace data will remain separated. Employers will not gain access to personal Copilot activity, while existing company security, compliance and administrative settings will remain in place.

Consumer chat histories and created images will migrate. Files shared with Copilot or generated by it will move to OneDrive. Deep Research will be replaced by Researcher only for Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers. Microsoft also says free users may reach usage limits sooner, while paid Microsoft 365 plans offer higher limits.

IT departments must update any Windows Recall exclusions for the renamed app, as settings attached to the old Copilot app will not transfer automatically.
