Google has begun internal testing of a new AI Mode for its search engine that aims to provide more comprehensive answers to complex queries. As reported by Abner Li for 9to5Google, the feature uses Gemini 2.0 to handle exploratory questions and follow-up queries that traditional search results don’t address well. The new interface appears alongside standard search filters like Images and News, offering a chatbot-like experience for users to interact with the search engine.
According to an internal email seen by 9to5Google, the system can help with detailed queries such as comparing different types of jackets or calculating portions for group meals. The AI Mode presents information in easily digestible formats with relevant web links displayed in a side panel. Users can ask follow-up questions through text or voice input on mobile devices.
The feature is currently being tested with Google employees in the United States, utilizing a custom version of Gemini 2.0 that provides enhanced reasoning capabilities. CEO Sundar Pichai has indicated that significant Search innovations are planned for 2025, suggesting a possible public release timeframe for the AI Mode.
