Google expands AI Mode in Search to all US users

Google has announced that its AI Mode in Search is now rolling out to all users in the United States, marking a significant expansion beyond the initial Labs testing phase. The company revealed this update during its I/O 2025 developer conference, alongside several new AI features coming to the search experience.

AI Mode represents Google’s attempt to transform Search from an information retrieval tool into an intelligent assistant. It uses a custom version of Gemini 2.5, Google’s most advanced AI model, to provide more comprehensive responses to complex queries. The feature appears as a separate tab in Search and in the Google app’s search bar.

“AI Mode is where we’ll first bring Gemini’s frontier capabilities, and it’s also a glimpse of what’s to come,” Google stated in its official blog post. The company plans to eventually integrate many of these capabilities into the core Search experience through AI Overviews.

New capabilities coming to AI Mode

Several new features were previewed at I/O 2025 that will first be available to Labs users before wider rollout:

  • Deep Search: An enhanced research tool that can issue hundreds of searches, analyze information from various sources, and create comprehensive, cited reports in minutes.
  • Search Live: Building on Project Astra, this feature allows users to interact with Search through their camera in real-time, getting explanations and suggestions for what they’re seeing.
  • Agentic capabilities: Based on Project Mariner, this functionality helps users complete tasks like purchasing tickets or making reservations by analyzing options across multiple websites.
  • AI shopping partner: A new experience that combines Gemini with Google’s Shopping Graph to help users browse products, virtually try on apparel, and even complete purchases through Google Pay.
  • Personalization options: Soon users can opt to have AI Mode consider their past searches and connect with other Google services, starting with Gmail, for more tailored results.

Google reports that AI Overviews, which launched last year, has been highly successful, driving over 10% increase in usage in major markets like the U.S. and India for queries that display AI Overviews.

While the basic AI Mode is rolling out to all U.S. users immediately, the advanced features showcased at I/O will be available to Labs testers in the coming weeks and months before potentially becoming part of the standard Search experience.
