Google is updating its AI-powered search features to surface quotes and links from online forums, social media, and discussion boards directly inside AI responses. The company says the change reflects how users increasingly seek advice from other people rather than traditional websites.
The most notable update pulls in what Google calls “a preview of perspectives” from firsthand sources like Reddit and other public forums. These excerpts appear alongside clickable links that include the community or creator’s name, so users can identify where information comes from and visit the full conversation if they choose.
Google is also introducing four other changes to its AI search experience:
- Links to in-depth articles at the end of AI responses, pointing users toward further reading on related topics
- Highlighted links from a user’s news subscriptions, making trusted sources easier to spot
- More inline links placed directly next to relevant text within AI responses
- Website previews on desktop when hovering over a link, showing the site name before clicking
The updates address a long-standing user habit: adding “Reddit” to Google searches to find real human experiences instead of SEO-driven content. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has previously noted that most Google users end up on Reddit at some point.
TechCrunch points out that AI Overviews remain prone to errors. A New York Times analysis found the feature accurate about nine times out of ten — a rate that could still produce inaccurate results for hundreds of thousands of searches per minute, given Google’s scale.
