Christie’s AI art auction faces widespread criticism

Christie’s auction house has announced its first dedicated AI art exhibition, sparking significant controversy in the art community. As reported by Kyle Wiggers, the “Augmented Intelligence” show will open on February 20 at Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries in New York. The exhibition features works from artists including Mat Dryhurst and showcases a live-painting robot. Critics argue that many AI art tools used in creating these works were trained on artists’ works without consent. An open letter demanding the auction’s cancellation has gathered over 1,800 signatures within 24 hours. Christie’s defended the selection, stating that participating artists have established practices and use AI in a controlled manner with their own data inputs.
