Apple explains why Siri’s advanced features remain delayed

Apple has provided detailed explanations for why promised Siri enhancements have not yet launched, more than a year after their initial announcement. The company’s software engineering chief Craig Federighi revealed the technical challenges behind the delay in a recent interview.

At WWDC 2024, Apple demonstrated advanced Siri capabilities including personalized context awareness, on-screen recognition, and deeper app integration. These features would allow Siri to access information across multiple apps and take actions based on personal data. Apple initially promised delivery within a year.

Technical architecture problems

Federighi explained that Apple developed two versions of Siri’s underlying architecture. The first version worked during development but failed to meet Apple’s quality standards when tested more extensively. By spring 2025, the company realized the first architecture’s limitations could not be overcome with additional development time.

Apple then shifted focus to a second-generation architecture that extends across Siri’s entire experience. Federighi clarified this was not a complete rebuild but rather an extension of existing work into a more comprehensive system.

The company has confirmed the enhanced Siri features will not launch until 2026. Federighi stated Apple will not announce a specific release date until the technology meets their quality expectations.
