Apple plans to pay Google $1 billion annually for AI to power Siri overhaul

Apple is preparing to pay Google approximately $1 billion per year to use an advanced AI model for a major Siri redesign. Mark Gurman reports for Bloomberg that the two tech giants are finalizing an agreement giving Apple access to Google’s Gemini technology.

The deal centers on a custom 1.2 trillion parameter AI model, significantly more powerful than Apple’s current 150 billion parameter system. Google’s model will handle Siri’s summarizer and planner functions, which help the assistant synthesize information and execute complex tasks. The new Siri is expected to launch next spring as part of iOS 26.4.

Apple will run the Google model on its own Private Cloud Compute servers to keep user data separate from Google’s infrastructure. The partnership represents an interim solution while Apple develops its own competing technology. The company is building a 1 trillion parameter model it hopes to deploy next year. Apple views the Google arrangement as temporary and plans to eventually replace Gemini with in-house AI.
