Apple Music will label songs materially generated with AI later this year

Apple Music plans to display visible labels on songs that content providers identify as materially generated using artificial intelligence. The service says it will introduce the feature later this year, but has not announced a launch date.

The labels build on Apple Music’s AI Transparency Tags, introduced in March. Record labels and distributors use those tags when uploading music to disclose material AI use. Apple Music says providers must apply the tags when AI created a significant part of a track, including music primarily derived from a generative AI service.

The new “Made With AI” labels will turn that disclosure into information listeners can see. Apple Music has not detailed how it will enforce the requirement or what the final label design will look like.

Disclosure responsibility

The approach places much of the responsibility on labels and distributors. Apple Music executive Oliver Schusser has previously said that providers are best placed to know how music was made, while also arguing that they need better tools to assess AI use in their catalogues.

The policy arrives as streaming services and music industry groups try to establish common standards. A recent industry proposal backed by recording industry stakeholders outlined separate labels for “AI-generated” music and “AI-assisted” music. It remains a proposal rather than a uniform system across platforms. Spotify has also announced new AI-related labeling measures.

According to reporting by Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter, Apple Music has said that more than one-third of its monthly incoming music submissions are fully AI-generated. Schusser has said listening to those tracks accounts for less than 1 percent of usage on the platform.
