The AI company Anthropic has expanded its “Memory” feature, previously exclusive to enterprise clients, to all paid subscribers of its Claude chatbot, including Pro and Max plan users. According to the company, the feature is designed to create a more personalized and efficient user experience by allowing the chatbot to remember context and preferences from previous conversations.
This enables Claude to retain user-provided details across multiple sessions. For example, if a user specifies project requirements or personal preferences in one chat, they do not need to repeat this information in subsequent conversations.
User control and privacy
Anthropic states that it has prioritized user control and data privacy in the design of the feature. Key aspects include:
- Optional use: The Memory feature is entirely optional and can be turned on or off in the settings.
- Transparency and editing: Users can view a summary of everything Claude has remembered and can edit or delete specific memories through conversation.
- Project-specific memory: For users of the “Projects” feature, Claude maintains separate memory spaces for each project to prevent information from mixing.
- Incognito mode: An “Incognito chat” option is available to all users for conversations that should not be saved to memory or chat history.
The company also noted that the feature underwent extensive safety testing to refine its responses and prevent the reinforcement of potentially harmful information.
