Anthropic calls for targeted AI regulation to prevent catastrophic risks

AI startup Anthropic, known for their Assistant Claude, is urging governments to take action on AI policy within the next 18 months to mitigate the growing risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems. In a post on their official website, the company argues that narrowly-targeted regulation can help realize the benefits of AI while preventing potential misuse in areas such as cybersecurity and biology.

Anthropic highlights their Responsible Scaling Policy (RSP) as a framework for identifying and mitigating catastrophic risks proportionately as AI capabilities increase. The company believes that mandatory transparency, incentives for better safety practices, and simple, focused regulations are key to effective AI governance. They emphasize the importance of policymakers, the AI industry, safety advocates, civil society, and lawmakers collaborating to develop an agreeable regulatory framework at the federal or state level in the US.
