Spotify is facing a growing problem of AI-generated fake music being uploaded to legitimate artists’ pages, Elizabeth Lopatto reports for The Verge. The fraudulent uploads target musicians with single-word names like Health, Annie, and Standards, appearing on their verified pages through music distributors. Industry expert Andrew Batey estimates that this type of streaming fraud costs artists $2-3 billion annually. Spotify confirmed removing content from one licensor, Ameritz Music, due to repeated metadata violations, while Universal Music Group has sued distributor Believe over similar fraudulent practices. The issue stems from Spotify’s distribution system working on an honor system, allowing bad actors to upload fake content through distributors and potentially collect royalties meant for legitimate artists. While Spotify claims to invest in fraud prevention, affected artists report difficulties in removing unauthorized content from their pages.
