PayPal has partnered with OpenAI to embed its digital wallet directly into ChatGPT. The agreement allows users to purchase items they discover through the artificial intelligence tool. Hugh Son reports for CNBC that the deal was finalized just now and is set to launch next year.
The integration enables PayPal’s consumer and merchant networks to connect with the AI platform. According to PayPal CEO Alex Chriss, millions of PayPal users will be able to use a “Buy with PayPal button” for a secure checkout experience. Merchants using PayPal can list their inventory on ChatGPT without needing to sign up with OpenAI directly. The company will manage all backend payment processing, including routing and validation.
This move is part of OpenAI’s strategy to expand ChatGPT’s capabilities for e-commerce, following recent deals with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart. Chriss described the development as a “whole new paradigm for shopping” and a step toward “agentic commerce”, where AI acts as a personal shopping assistant.
PayPal stated that its system of verified merchants and consumers helps reduce the risk of fraud. Users will have access to standard protections, including package tracking and dispute resolution. The company also announced it is expanding its internal use of OpenAI’s enterprise products to accelerate its own product development.
