OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout, allowing users to purchase products directly through its ChatGPT chatbot. Ashley Capoot reports for CNBC. The feature initially supports single-item purchases from U.S. Etsy sellers and is available to all U.S. ChatGPT users. More than one million Shopify merchants, including brands like Skims and Glossier, will join the platform soon.
OpenAI will collect fees from completed transactions, creating a new revenue stream for the company. The startup currently operates at a loss while expanding its computing infrastructure. Fee details remain confidential due to private contracts with partners.
“Our vision for ChatGPT is that it’s not just providing you information, it is also helping you get things done in the real world,” says Michelle Fradin, OpenAI’s product lead for ChatGPT commerce. The company plans to add multi-item shopping carts and expand to additional regions. ChatGPT currently serves over 700 million weekly active users, with many questions relating to shopping and commerce.
