Anthropic has released a comprehensive analysis showing how AI is being used across different occupations and tasks in the modern workforce. The study, based on millions of anonymized conversations with their AI assistant Claude, found that AI usage is currently highest in software development and technical writing. According to the research, about 36% of occupations use AI for at least a quarter of their tasks, while only 4% employ it for three-quarters or more of their work activities. The analysis reveals that AI is more commonly used for augmentation (57%) rather than automation (43%) of tasks. Computer and mathematical occupations account for 37.2% of AI usage, followed by arts and media at 10.3%. The study found that AI adoption is most prevalent in mid-to-high wage occupations, while both the lowest and highest-paid roles show limited AI use. To promote further research, Anthropic has made their dataset publicly available and is inviting economists and policy experts to provide input on their Economic Index initiative.
