Dr. Dre compares AI fears to the backlash against drum machines

Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre say artificial intelligence will strengthen music production rather than undermine it, framing the technology as another creative tool for artists and producers.

Jordyn Holman reports for The New York Times that the longtime business partners reject the idea that AI poses an inherent threat to music. Iovine says gifted people in studios can use AI to make better records, while acknowledging that the technology will also produce poor work.

Dr. Dre compares current concerns to earlier resistance to drum machines and synthesizers. “It’s a new tool for creativity,” he says. In his view, people who struggle to create are more likely to see AI as a threat.

The producer says he already uses AI in his work, primarily to test what the technology can do with material he has created. Iovine adds that other producers, including Timbaland, are using AI as well, though some are reluctant to discuss it publicly.

AI as part of creative work

The comments come from two executives and producers with a long record of adapting music to technological change. Iovine and Dr. Dre helped build Beats by Dre, which Apple acquired for $3 billion, and contributed to Apple’s streaming music business. Iovine also experienced the disruption caused by Napster, which reshaped how recorded music was distributed and monetized.

Beyond music, the pair promotes interdisciplinary education through the USC Iovine and Young Academy, which they established with a $70 million donation in 2013. The program combines technology, design and business, reflecting Iovine’s view that companies need closer collaboration between engineering, design and cultural understanding.

For content professionals, their argument points to a practical distinction: AI can assist experimentation and production, but human judgment, creative direction and execution remain central to the final work.
