YouTuber Hank Green is an example for the current AI dilemma of creators

YouTuber and author Hank Green says he plans to slow his video output after acknowledging that his growing use of AI chatbots has become unhealthy. Anthony Ha reports for TechCrunch that Green apologized to his audience and said he needs to better control both his production pace and his impulses around large language models.

The discussion began after viewers noticed an unusual phrase in a video on Complexly, an educational channel. Green said “I appreciate the pushback,” prompting speculation that a chatbot response had mistakenly remained in the script. Green later said the line referred to the episode’s guest, not to an AI system.

In a since-deleted post on X, Green acknowledged using ChatGPT to research the script while under significant pressure. In a longer Reddit post, he said he was “mortified” and accepted criticism that AI use may have diluted his work.

Research assistance, but questions about process

Green maintains that he uses ChatGPT to find academic papers and other learning resources. He says the writing and opinions in his videos remain his own. Still, he said his rapid workflow has made the boundaries of that process unclear, and he wants to ensure audiences can trust that his words are his.

He also stresses that he does not reject AI outright. However, he cites concerns about the technology’s environmental impact and the concentration of economic power among AI companies.

Green now expects to pause or post less often across his YouTube channels. He says he wants to focus more on carefully written videos and simpler unscripted formats. His comments highlight a growing issue for creators: AI may speed up research and production, but it can also blur authorship, encourage overwork and weaken audience trust when its role is not clearly defined.
