OpenAI is teasing a physical shortcut device for its Codex coding tool

OpenAI is releasing a physical hardware device tied to its AI-powered coding assistant, Codex. Emma Roth reports for The Verge that the launch is scheduled for July 15th. The device will be released in partnership with Work Louder, a company specialising in mechanical keyboards and programmable macro pads.

OpenAI revealed the product in a short video posted to X (Twitter). The clip shows a square-shaped device with several buttons and carries the caption: “Your favorite Codex shortcuts are getting an upgrade.”

A programmable shortcut pad for AI workflows

The device appears similar to Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2, an existing product that features 13 mechanical switches, a joystick, and a touch sensor. That device lets users assign custom shortcuts and actions to its controls depending on the app they are using. Figma has previously partnered with Work Louder on a comparable product with preconfigured shortcuts for its design software.

Neither OpenAI nor Work Louder has shared pricing, availability details, or the full list of supported shortcuts ahead of the launch. It is also worth noting that this device is separate from the wider AI hardware project OpenAI is reportedly developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive.
