Codex Micro: OpenAI’s $230 gadget lets you control AI agents

OpenAI has opened orders for Codex Micro, a limited-edition desktop keypad built to monitor and control AI coding agents. Megan Morrone reports for Axios that the device is a collaboration with Work Louder, a boutique hardware maker known for customizable keyboards for developers and designers.

The small macro pad sits next to a regular keyboard. It features backlit keys, a rotary knob and a tiny joystick. Users can customize shortcuts for common Codex actions, including a push-to-talk button and a dial to adjust the reasoning setting. The keypad also displays the status of running agents at a glance.

A niche device with a bigger message

Codex Micro targets power users of Codex, OpenAI’s coding assistant, and will only be sold while supplies last. The launch follows OpenAI’s recent rollout of ChatGPT Work, a product for people who use agents outside of software development.

According to Axios, this keypad is not the consumer hardware OpenAI is reportedly developing for later this year. Bloomberg has previously reported that OpenAI plans a smart speaker with ChatGPT built in, similar to an Amazon Alexa or Google Home device, expected to launch in 2027. That timeline could face delays following Apple’s lawsuit against OpenAI over alleged theft of hardware secrets.

Morrone notes that Microsoft added a dedicated Copilot key to some keyboards back in 2024, but that button only summoned a chat assistant. Codex Micro, by contrast, offers a full control surface for people managing agents throughout the workday. One feature invites caution: a dedicated button approves an agent’s access, which could make it easy to accidentally grant permissions.
