Your emails and photos can now power Gemini responses

Google has launched a new feature called Personal Intelligence for its Gemini assistant. This tool allows the AI to connect with other Google services like Gmail, Photos, and YouTube. According to Google, this integration helps the assistant answer specific questions using a user’s own data. For example, Gemini can now retrieve a license plate number from a photo or find travel details buried in an email.

The service is currently a beta release for paid subscribers in the United States. Google states that the feature is turned off by default. Users must manually choose which apps to link to the assistant. The company claims that it does not train its AI models directly on the private content of emails or photo libraries. Instead, it uses specific prompts and responses to improve the system’s reasoning over time.

Current limitations and privacy

While the feature offers more tailored help, Google acknowledges that the technology is not perfect. The AI may sometimes experience over-personalization. This occurs when the model makes incorrect connections between unrelated topics. ZDNet reports that the assistant might also struggle with changing social nuances, such as relationship status or the actual context of a hobby.

Users can correct the AI through chat or provide feedback using a rating system. The feature is limited to personal Google accounts. It is not currently available for business or education users.
