You can now bring your entire AI history with you when switching to Gemini

Google has launched new tools for its Gemini AI assistant that allow users to transfer their chat history and personal preferences from other AI apps, such as ChatGPT and Claude, directly into Gemini.

The update introduces two main features. Users can now import a summary of personal context — such as interests, relationships, and preferences — by pasting a generated summary from another AI app into Gemini’s settings. They can also upload a ZIP file containing their full conversation history from other providers.

Google provides a ready-made prompt that users can copy into their current AI app to generate that summary. Once pasted into Gemini, the assistant stores the information and applies it to future conversations. The company says this removes the need to start from scratch when switching assistants.

The import tools are available to both free and paid users and can be found in the Gemini settings page. Google is also renaming its existing “past chats” feature to “memory.”

The move is part of a broader competition for AI users. Anthropic released a similar memory import feature for its Claude assistant earlier, describing it as a way to retain users. Google’s approach targets users of competing services looking to switch.
