AI startup World Labs develops system to create interactive 3D scenes from single photos

World Labs, founded by AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, has introduced an AI system that can generate interactive 3D environments from a single image. The company has secured $230 million in funding and reached a valuation of over $1 billion, with investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Intel Capital.

The system allows users to explore AI-generated 3D scenes through a web browser using keyboard and mouse controls. According to World Labs, the generated environments maintain consistency and follow basic physics rules, featuring adjustable camera effects like depth of field and interactive elements such as lighting changes.

The technology currently has some limitations, as users can only move within restricted areas, and occasional rendering errors occur where objects blend unnaturally. World Labs states this is an early preview, with the company working on improving world size and fidelity. The startup aims to release its first commercial product in 2025, targeting professionals in gaming, film, and design industries.
