Wikipedia steps up its fight against AI-generated content

Wikipedia’s volunteer editors are expanding their efforts to find and remove AI-generated material that violates the encyclopedia’s rules. The work now extends beyond obvious chatbot phrases to misleading citations and subtler writing patterns. Eliza Strickland reports for IEEE Spectrum that the WikiProject AI Cleanup began after editors noticed articles filled with repeated, unnatural language and unusual structures.

Ellia Lebleu, a founding member of the project, says early examples often contained phrases such as generic statements about cultural heritage or importance. More recent AI writing is harder to identify. Editors look for accumulated patterns, including rigid rhetorical structures, and examine editing behavior. An account that produces several long articles within minutes can prompt closer review.

Citations are a growing concern

The project is particularly concerned about citations that appear legitimate but do not support the claims made in an article. According to Lebleu, fully invented sources have become less common as AI systems increasingly retrieve real material. However, systems still regularly misrepresent what those sources say.

Lebleu says tests with the detection company Pangram flagged about 20 percent of new articles and drafts as likely AI-generated in late 2025. That estimate fell to roughly 15 to 16 percent in early 2026. She cautions that the result does not yet show whether stricter Wikipedia rules are reducing AI submissions or whether detection tools are struggling to keep pace with better models.

Wikipedia editors are also using AI tools in response. One tool checks whether sources match an article’s claims, while the Wikimedia Foundation is developing Paste Check to flag text copied from certain chatbots. Lebleu says these systems can help reviewers prioritize cases, but they cannot replace human judgment.

The debate now reaches beyond enforcement. Wikipedia may eventually consider AI-assisted options, Lebleu says, while preserving its role as a human-written resource. That distinction could matter as AI search products increasingly summarize Wikipedia without showing users how the encyclopedia can be edited.
