Warner Bros. Discovery has filed a lawsuit against the prominent artificial intelligence image generator Midjourney, accusing it of mass copyright infringement. Winston Cho reports for The Hollywood Reporter that the complaint alleges Midjourney built its business by illegally using the studio’s movies and TV shows to train its AI system. Warner Bros. Discovery claims the service can generate images of its iconic characters like Batman, Bugs Bunny, and the cast of Rick and Morty that closely resemble copyrighted works. The company joins other major studios, including Disney and Universal, in legal action against the AI firm. A spokesperson stated that Midjourney is “blatantly and purposefully infringing copyrighted works”. The studio seeks Midjourney’s profits from the alleged infringement or statutory damages of up to $150,000 per work.
