US homeland security chief criticizes EU’s AI regulation approach

The outgoing US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has warned against Europe’s strict approach to AI regulation. In an interview with the Financial Times, reported by Cristina Criddle and Tabby Kinder, Mayorkas expressed concern about the growing tensions between the US and Europe over AI oversight. He emphasized that Europe’s “adversarial” relationship with tech companies could create security vulnerabilities and hamper global regulatory coordination. The EU recently implemented its AI Act, considered the world’s strictest AI legislation. Mayorkas advocated for a more flexible, descriptive approach rather than mandatory regulations, arguing that rigid rules could impede innovation in the rapidly evolving sector. His department has been actively incorporating AI into its operations, including training refugee officers and launching an internal chatbot powered by OpenAI through Microsoft’s Azure platform.
