Inkeep has released OpenKnowledge, a free and open-source markdown editor designed to work alongside AI tools such as Claude, Codex, and Cursor. The company publishes the project on GitHub. OpenKnowledge combines a visual document editor with built-in support for AI agents, positioning itself as a tool for teams that want to manage knowledge bases collaboratively with AI.
The editor displays markdown files in a fully visual format, meaning users see formatted text rather than raw code. The experience is designed to feel similar to tools like Google Docs or Notion, without requiring any knowledge of markdown syntax.
Built for AI workflows
OpenKnowledge connects to AI tools through MCP (Model Context Protocol), a standard that allows AI agents to read and interact with external content. This lets agents such as Claude or Codex use the wiki as a reference while working on tasks. The project describes this use case as providing AI agents with a “second brain” or supporting what it calls spec-driven development, where project specifications stored in the wiki guide AI behavior.
Teams can share and synchronise content without writing code. Under the hood, the tool uses Git and GitHub to manage version control and syncing automatically.
Availability and installation
- macOS users can download a native desktop app.
- Linux, Windows, and Intel Mac users run the editor as a local web app via a command-line tool. Node.js version 24 or higher is required.
The project is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0, meaning anyone can use, modify, and redistribute the software freely. Public contributions are welcome via GitHub pull requests.
