Study shows generative AI has minimal impact on jobs and wages

New research seems to show that generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT have had almost no significant impact on jobs or wages so far. Economists Anders Humlum and Emilie Vestergaard analyzed data from 11 occupations across 25,000 workers in Denmark, according to The Register. Despite rapid adoption of AI tools, users reported average time savings of only 2.8 percent of work hours. The study found that AI is creating new tasks, such as reviewing AI outputs and writing prompts, which offset potential productivity gains. Humlum explained that while workers experience some time savings, these benefits aren’t translating into higher earnings. The findings raise questions about the economic return on massive investments in AI infrastructure, as companies like Microsoft and Amazon are scaling back their AI spending.
