Stripe buys OpenRouter in a major move for AI model access

Stripe plans to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model marketplace and gateway used by developers and companies to access models from multiple providers. OpenRouter announces in an official blog post that the deal remains subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the coming weeks.

The company says its product, name, mission and roadmap will remain unchanged after the transaction. Existing customers will not need to alter their integrations, according to OpenRouter. Routing decisions will continue to focus on users’ needs rather than favouring a particular model provider or parent company, it says.

OpenRouter offers a single interface for finding, using and managing AI models. It also provides tools for monitoring usage, controlling costs and routing requests between providers to improve price, performance and availability. The company says it processes more than 10 trillion tokens each day across more than 400 AI models and serves over 10 million developers and companies.

Why Stripe is buying OpenRouter

OpenRouter describes the deal as a way to expand faster while retaining its position as a neutral layer between AI model makers, inference providers and users. The company argues that businesses will increasingly rely on several models rather than a single dominant system.

Stripe brings a large business customer network and experience operating global payments infrastructure. OpenRouter also points to Stripe’s fraud and abuse prevention capabilities, which it expects to become more important as AI services scale.

The acquisition links two developer-focused platforms at a time when AI inference, the computing required to run models, is becoming a larger operating cost for companies. OpenRouter says it will also continue building services around inference, including AI-native web search and context management.
