Optimizely introduces AI teammates for core marketing roles

Optimizely has launched Virtual Teammates, a set of AI-powered agents designed to take on recurring marketing work with defined roles, permissions and access to organizational context. Dom Nicastro reports for CMSWire that the company unveiled the product at its Opticon event in New York.

Unlike a chatbot that waits for individual prompts, the new agents are intended to operate as persistent members of a marketing team. Companies can assign each agent scheduled or event-based responsibilities, limit its access through scoped permissions and define when a person must approve its work.

Optimizely says the approach addresses the growing number of disconnected AI applications used by business-to-business marketing teams. In a company survey of more than 2,000 B2B marketing leaders, 81 percent say they use at least two AI tools each week. Nineteen percent say they use four or more.

Five defined roles at launch

The initial lineup covers five common marketing functions:

  • Chief of Staff: Prepares meetings, follows up on actions and creates recurring briefings.
  • SEO and AI Search Analyst: Tracks search visibility, reviews answer engine optimization performance and suggests actions.
  • Marketing Analyst: Converts marketing data into insights on acquisition and conversion.
  • Personalization Strategist: Identifies campaign opportunities and monitors results.
  • CRO Manager: Reviews experiments and recommends improvements for conversion rates.

The agents run on Opal, Optimizely’s AI platform. The company has been expanding Opal from an assistant into a system that coordinates specialized agents across its digital experience platform.

The announcement reflects a broader shift toward agentic AI in marketing software. The potential benefit is less manual switching between tools and fewer routine handoffs. But the model also raises governance requirements. Optimizely emphasizes audit trails, role-based access and human review, particularly where agents can affect campaigns, data or customer experiences.
