Opera launches AI browser Neon with subscription model

The software company Opera has launched its new AI-powered browser, Neon. According to reports, the browser is initially available to a limited number of waitlisted users for around $20 per month. Opera describes Neon as an “agentic browser,” designed to use artificial intelligence to actively perform tasks for the user, rather than just displaying information.

Neon organizes user activities into a few core features:

  • Tasks: These are self-contained workspaces for different projects, such as planning a trip or researching a product. This structure is intended to prevent the AI from confusing the context between different activities.
  • Do: This is the AI agent that performs the actual browsing within a Task. It can open tabs, compare information across sources, fill out forms, and even complete transactions on a user’s behalf. Opera states this function runs locally on the user’s device, keeping login credentials private.
  • Cards: These are reusable prompt instructions that function like building blocks. Users can combine them to automate common workflows without having to write new instructions each time.

The launch of Neon places Opera in a growing market for AI browsers, competing with products from companies like Perplexity and The Browser Company. For now, Neon is a standalone product and will not replace the existing Opera browser.
