OpenAI has introduced a new way to interact with ChatGPT through a toll-free number (1-800-CHATGPT) and WhatsApp messaging service. According to the company’s official explanation, users in the United States and Canada can now call 1-800-242-8478 to speak with ChatGPT, while international users can access the service via WhatsApp messaging. The service is available without requiring a ChatGPT account, though usage is limited to 15 minutes per month for free calls.
The new service aims to make ChatGPT more accessible to people who may not have consistent data connections or prefer traditional communication channels. OpenAI states that conversations are stored and may be reviewed for safety and abuse prevention purposes. The service currently supports only text conversations through WhatsApp, and features like ChatGPT search, image chat, and personalization options are not available through this channel.
The company emphasizes that this is an experimental launch developed during a recent hack week. Users should be aware that ChatGPT will never initiate contact, and verification can be done by checking the official phone number and WhatsApp verified badge. Standard carrier fees may apply for calls, and the service works best in quiet environments with minimal background noise. OpenAI recommends using headphones or earphones for voice conversations to minimize interruptions.
