OpenAI is turning its chatbot into a full-fledged software platform by opening the ChatGPT App Directory to all third-party developers. Carl Franzen reports for VentureBeat that the company is now accepting submissions for tools that integrate directly into the chat interface. These apps allow more than 800 million users to perform tasks like editing photos or managing emails without leaving their conversations.
The new directory differs from the previous GPT Store by offering deeper integration and interactive elements. Developers can now include buttons, maps, and sliders in their creations. While early partners include giants like Adobe and Microsoft, the platform is now open to solo builders and large enterprises alike. OpenAI manually reviews every submission to ensure it meets strict safety and quality standards. Approved applications will begin appearing for users in early 2026.
Monetization remains limited in this early phase. Apps can currently only link to external sites for the purchase of physical goods. OpenAI prohibits the sale of digital subscriptions or in-app services for now. The company also emphasizes data privacy by requiring apps to minimize data collection. Users must confirm any action that sends information to an external system. Despite these safeguards, some ambiguity remains regarding how OpenAI itself handles the data exchanged during these interactions. The company plans to host a webinar in January to help developers navigate the new submission process.
