OpenAI to release full o3 model soon while delaying GPT-5

OpenAI has reversed its decision to cancel the consumer release of its o3 reasoning model. CEO Sam Altman announced on X (formerly Twitter) that both o3 and a next-generation successor, o4-mini, will launch in “a couple of weeks.” According to Kyle Wiggers reporting for TechCrunch, this change relates to OpenAI’s upcoming GPT-5, which will incorporate reasoning capabilities. Altman explained that while GPT-5 will be “much better than originally thought,” integration challenges have pushed its release back to “a few months” from now. In addition to these models, OpenAI plans to debut its first open language model since GPT-2 in the coming months, which will also feature reasoning capabilities.
