OpenAI launches Sora on Android and introduces paid video credits

OpenAI has released its AI video generation app, Sora, for Android devices. The app is now available on the Google Play Store in the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. This expansion follows the app’s iOS launch in September, where it reportedly accumulated over one million downloads in its first five days.

Alongside the Android release, the company has introduced new monetization plans for the tool. Users can now purchase extra video generations, with a package of 10 credits selling for $4 through Apple’s App Store. Currently, OpenAI provides a limit of 30 free generations per day.

However, the company plans to reduce this free quota in the future. Bill Peebles, who heads the Sora team at OpenAI, stated that the current economics for power users are “completely unsustainable.” He explained that the free generations will need to be brought down to “accommodate growth,” citing the availability of GPUs as a limiting factor.

OpenAI also outlined plans for another revenue stream involving its “cameo” feature. The company stated it envisions a system where copyright holders can license their material. According to Peebles, this would give rightsholders the option to “charge extra for cameos of beloved characters and people” in user-generated videos.
