OpenAI is exploring the possibility of introducing advertising to its AI products while pursuing new revenue streams. According to a Financial Times article by Madhumita Murgia, Cristina Criddle, and George Hammond, the company has been hiring advertising experts from Meta and Google, including former Google search advertising leader Shivakumar Venkataraman. While Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar confirmed the company is considering an advertising model, she emphasized they would be “thoughtful about when and where” to implement ads. The $150 billion-valued company currently generates about $4 billion in annualized revenue but faces significant costs in developing AI models. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has grown to over 250 million weekly active users, with revenue primarily coming from API access and license sales. Following the initial interview, Friar clarified that while open to exploring new revenue streams, the company has “no active plans to pursue advertising.”
