OpenAI adds reusable characters and video stitching to its Sora app

OpenAI has released an update for its Sora video generation app, introducing features designed to create more complex and narrative-driven content. The new tools include reusable “character cameos,” video stitching, and community leaderboards.

The “character cameo” feature allows users to create reusable avatars from various subjects, including pets, illustrations, and toys, building on the app’s existing deepfake capabilities. According to OpenAI’s release notes, each character can be assigned a name and handle and then tagged to appear in videos. Users can set permissions to keep a character private, share it with mutual followers, or make it available to everyone on the platform. OpenAI is launching the feature with a selection of pre-made characters, including Halloween-themed options like Dracula and a witch.

The update also includes a video stitching tool, enabling users to combine multiple clips into a single, longer video. In addition, new leaderboards will showcase the most remixed videos and the most frequently used characters.

To promote the new features, OpenAI has temporarily removed its invitation requirement for users in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea. The app has also expanded its availability to Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
