OpenAI reaches $10 billion in annual revenue milestone

OpenAI has achieved $10 billion in annual recurring revenue, nearly doubling its performance from $5.5 billion last year. The milestone comes less than three years after launching ChatGPT.

The revenue figure encompasses consumer ChatGPT subscriptions, business products, and API services, but excludes Microsoft licensing deals and large one-time contracts, according to an OpenAI spokesperson. Despite the impressive growth, the San Francisco company reported losses of approximately $5 billion last year due to substantial operational costs.

OpenAI now supports 500 million weekly active users and serves three million paying business customers. The company has set an ambitious target of $125 billion in revenue by 2029, according to sources familiar with internal projections.

The revenue milestone provides context for OpenAI’s record-breaking $40 billion funding round completed in March, which valued the company at roughly 30 times its current revenue.
